Loot Crate

Created concept art for a hero and using
Substance Painter and Blender, turned him
into a carefully rigged and detailed model.

Concept Art

Using my tablet, I was able to sketch my character. Using inspiration from parts of my life, such as the number 7, to the jacket being used to even the iconic Jordan 1, I made sure to draw my hero using important values.

Photoshop

After exporting my sketch to Photoshop, I had a strong sense of the type of materials and colors that I wanted to use in my detailed drawing of my hero. I aimed for using varsity blue color tones to match the sneakers and also, included my pallet at the top left.

Blender: Creating the Body

Using the sketch made on Photoshop, I then created another sketch to see how the character would look under the jacket. I highlighted the body in red to really make it clear how and where to model the body.

Jacket, Hands, and Feet

Now that I had a basic body model, I finally moved on to create the hands and feet. I made sure to focus heavily on these two features as they would be moving parts when I rigged him in the future. I also made the jacket and belt accessories.

Sculpting the Head

With the body and accesories done, it was now time to define and create the head. Using Blenders sculpting feature, I went in and learned how to use the variety of tools. I did my best to sculpt in every detail in the face. Though, the file became too large due to the amount of triangles being used, so I then did a retopology of the head to reduce the file size.

Blender to Substance Painter

Once I had the body connected to the head, I was finally able to begin detailing and adding a bit more life to my model. Substance painter was the tool used to ensure that the colors and clothing had materials and realistic feels to them.

Rigging and Weights

Finally, after detailing my character, I moved on to the rigging process. I needed to add weights to the clothing in order to ensure that the clothing and accessories would not move in the animation process.
